1955 Ferrari 500 Mondial Spyder -- oldest, most significant and probably most valuable car in the show (see CAPTION; 8998)

This car originally was a factory team racer. It garnered a number of class and overall race victories in the 1950s and, as a vintage racer, was successfully campaigned in later years. In the 2008 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, it won a Best in Class award and the Enzo Ferrari Trophy for being the best Ferrari in the field. In the 2009 Cavallino Classic Concorso d'Eleganza, it won a Platinum Award and the Scuderia Ferrari Cup for Best of Show among Competition Ferraris. That same 2009 weekend, it won the Vintage Spirit Award and the Finest Competition Award at the Classic Sports Sunday Concours at Mar-a-Lago. It has also won awards at other car shows. Admiral Phillips has owned this car since May 1960.
