Whittell had 600 ft/183 m of tunnels dug thru the solid granite
that the estate sits on. The tunnels gave him all-weather access
between the various buildings of the estate, and allowed him to
indulge his passion for secrecy regarding his activities and the
identity of female guests he entertained. Rails laid on the floor
of the tunnels allowed carts to move loads that were too heavy or
bulky to be transported by hand. The walls and floor of the tunnels
were surfaced with other types of rock to give a more finished look.
The cool, dark tunnels were Bill the lion's favorite place to nap.
