Blending In

Tucson, AZ

A young Western Diamond-back rattlesnake, about 18 inches
long, that briefly visited our side yard. We saw it again
the following night, again in the same spot, but it has
since moved on. It was neat to watch it coil itself up ---
its head kind of stays in one position while it pulls the
rest of its body in and round to make a tight coil, with
the tail being the last part to be positioned.

They can certainly blend in very well, looks like he is keeping an eye on you, way to go.

Another nice image of these snakes...
I am glad that we have no snakes in our neighborhood, all though there are plenty up near the "rock bluffs" above Sage Creek. I am told there is a big den of them and occasionally they are found in the sage flats hunting for ground squirrels...
