I've got fairly big hands, and I fell in love with the added wraparound area a motor drive/provides when I got one for my FE-2 a million years ago. A battery pack provides that same feel, and things just don't feel right if I don't have one to wrap my fingers around. Not an issue for people with smaller hands, but for big lugs like you and me, it does make a difference.

Even with the added grip it's still quite a bit smaller than the D3. Such a cute little thing!
