Clement also built a church on the foundation of a fifth-century Christian basilica
in the same area and arranged for his burial there. Under Turkish rule, it was first
turned into a mosque and then allowed to fall into ruin. In 1943, archaeologists began a
search. Sixty years later, the church had been reconstructed and was sanctified
in the names of both Clement and Pantekejmon. Work continues on the basilica.
