Cashier, Rock City Café, Rock City, Arizona, 2011

I made this portrait as this cashier turned away from her computer for a moment to catch the window light. Her illuminated profile repeats the glowing light on the pillar at right. The image tells us she is on the job, yet her mind is definitely elsewhere at this moment.

Thanks, Claudia, for your kind words on this image. You are right -- it is simply an ordinary moment in time, yet even the ordinary can sometimes convey extraordinary meanings. I leave it to my viewers to make of such moments what they will.

Anne ma soeur Anne ne vois-tu rien venir» - et la soeur anne lui repondait: - «je ne vois rien que le soleil qui poudroie et l'herbe qui verdoie.» -- Little ordinary moments that speak volume... Your refined trademark ;))

You heard what I saw, Iris. Thanks, Iris, for listening to her sigh of relief.

The beautiful light adds a very serene quality to this momentary mental break from the job at hand. I can almost hear the sigh of relief that lunch is over and there's time to gaze off and think about something other than the dinner hour to come.

You are right, Carol. I made this image exactly at 2:00 pm. For a restaurant, lunch is over, and the dinner hour is still yet to come. Actually, she was working almost constantly while I was shooting her. The next day was Mother's Day, and dozens of customers were coming in just to take home their famous pies. The light here is lovely, and her profile takes full advantage of it.

That 2pm lull in business often makes for nice portrait opportunities. She does appear to be a bit listless and bored with no activity at that moment. The light is lovely and flattering on her face. as she gazes outside.
