Last light, Scottsdale Civic Center, Scottsdale, Arizona, 2011

This visitor seems to be patiently waiting for the day to end. I moved my vantage point in order to place his head between the leaves of an overhead tree, and backlight him with the reflected sunlight bouncing off the building in the background. The backlighting throws him into a silhouette, creating anonymity, and transforming him into a symbol of all who must wait.

The leaves that are in silhouette are in shadow here. When I spot-metered on the bright background, the shadowy leaves went black. The green leaves elsewhere in the tree were illuminated by the setting sun, and did not go into silhouette. Hope this explains things here, Iris, and thanks for enjoying the feel of this image.

I love the feeling of this image, Phil, but I have a technical question. How do you spot meter on the brightest part of the image and still have the leaves of the tree bright green instead of having them also in silhouette?

I find this very "philesque" I do love the warmth of the yellow at the heart of the image.
