Leucistic Ruddy Turnstone - Duxbury Beach, MA - 05-14-2011 [2628]

This partially leucistic one-of-a-kind bird was seen and photographed almost exactly 2 years ago within 1/2 mile of the same spot on Duxbury Beach, MA! (Link to previous photos: http://www.pbase.com/rickbowes/odd_turnstone). One doesn't need leg bands to document that this is a return visit given the unique appearance of this individual! (see also notes in description of this Gallery)

When compared with a "regular" Ruddy Turnsone the head is very white - but still has coloring on he the top and nape as can be seen from back views. The nearly solid rusty back is different from the regular Ruddy which has much black in the back feathering. A Ruddy Turnstone has bright orange legs, and this bird's legs are essentially black - though in some of this year's photos there is a faint hint of color - probably just due to better light on the bird. Finally the undertail coverts show black splotching which I don't believe is seen on a Ruddy Turnstone (in 2009 I thought it might be some dirt or smudging - but since it is still there 2 years later it must be feather coloration). This truly appears to be a very unique, handsome and thankfully cooperative bird!

Where in 2009 it was hanging out with other Turnstones, this year it was loosely allied with 3 Black-bellied Plovers. However, when I slowly approached to try for photos, the Plovers flew off a way, but the Turnstone stayed put - giving me the chance to get this series of shots.
