Another day spent hanging around in my backyard with a book in one hand and camera in the other. There were 7+ White-crowned Sparrows around today and they were singing on and off all day. I had never heard a White-crowned Sparrow sing until today. I had my video camera out and caught a video clip of one feeding with others singing in the background (video below). The video also includes a short clip of a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker drumming.
White-crowned Sparrows appear to be aggressive bully birds. They pounced on all the White-thraoted Sparrows that came near and the Juncos wouldn't go anywhere near them. The White-thraoted Sparrows, on the other hand, willingly shared with the Chipping and Song Sparrows and Juncos when the White-crowneds were gone.
