back in the 1920's this stretch of Lombard Street proved too steep for the cars of the era to climb, so the gradient was softened by introducing a zig-zag pattern on the sudden slope...this day there was an endless procession of cars going down the so-called 'crookedest street in the world'...all driving slowly...very slowly
