Bee with a parasite load

This bee is so laden with parasites (mites, I think), that I can't begin to figure out what species the bee is, but possibly a sweat bee. When I first saw it in my garden I thought it was something quite unusual because the thorax appeared a very fuzzy brown! Only when I got this one photo and viewed it on the computer did I realize the poor thing was covered with parasites.

You have such an eye for these poor creatures. I hate to think this is the way bees will end up.
