Yesterday's bird bonanza also extended to my backyard. New were 8 Purple Finches (4 males and 4 females) along with 12+ White-throated Sparrows, 5 Song Sparrows and 2 Chipping Sparrows. I still have one American Tree Sparrow, 20+ Juncos, and at least one Common Redpoll left. Totally unexpected was a beautiful and very vocal male Eastern Towhee, a first for my backyard and the 100th species of bird I have recorded in my backyard. He has been at my feeders on and off all day.
I was out in my backyard on and off all morning trying to get a photo of the Eastern Towhee, but he was very shy and I missed the only opportunity I have had so far to photograph him by a fraction of a second. I've seen these birds stick around for up to a week in the nearby Greenbelt before moving on to their breeding grounds, so maybe there will be another chance in the coming days. While I was trying to get a photo of my special visitor, I caught this pair of Purple Finches.
Meanwhile, in the woods, most of the birds that I saw yesterday were gone today. A supermassive wind storm moved in at around noon, the strongest I think I have ever experienced here, and in the nearby woods I heard trees crashing down at a rate of one every 10-15 minutes. It was quite scary.
