Painted the step wells black per the prototype and started fading the paint, I used cheap acrylic paint thinned with water, I used Americana brand True Blue for this fade, about 20% paint to 80% water and built up the fade in layers, letting the fade dry between coats. This is time consuming as you are building up the fade slowly, oh and dull*coat first.
