The gates of the Mallala oval have these drawings which caught
my interest when we called in for a break in the driving
to friends place for a birthday celebration.
The first white settlement of the district dates back to 1839, and
throughout the district large tracts of surveyed land were allotted
to pastoralists who farmed mostly grain and sheep. The district
council of Mallala was originally proclaimed in 1937. In 1939 the
Royal Australian Air Force established a base to the north of the town
which was subsequently closed in 1960, hence the inclusion of the
plane in this drawing.
