European Earwig (Forficula auricularia), female

Found this critter when I turned over a rock looking for snakes and insects. This was with a bunch of ants which appeared to be tending it. She was not very responsive and the ants didn't seem to like my intrusion and rushed over to clamber across and even pull at her.

Thanks to the folk at Bug Guide for telling me this was a female earwig.

That's a sizable insect and lovely red, too.

These are among the strangest looking insects around, I think. I was terrified of them as a kid because my friends and I all believed that they could bite and bite hard. But we readily handled centipedes! Earwigs were all over the place back then. Now they seem to be hard to find. Two years ago I was taken aback when I saw one flying. That was the first time I had ever seen an earwig fly. Until then I thought a flying earwig was a myth! Imagine the terror among my friends and I if we knew that back in the day!
