The Blue Nile Sailing Club is the site of the Melik gunboat. One of Kitcheners twin screw boats made on the Thames by Thornycrofts. Dismantled after river trials and shipped in sections to Cairo, then by train, barge and bullock up the Nile and re assembled. She served with Kitchener at the Battle of Omdurman in 1898, and ultimately became the headquarters of the Blue Nile Sailing Club. Some years back a major flood lifted the boat onto the river bank where she now sits awaiting restoration.
