Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton stared in Noel Coward's production of Private Lives at the Shubert Theater in Chicago. This media shot was taken opening night arriving at the theater. This was my first experience in dealing with a huge fan frenzy. I had four security people with me, one next to me in the car, one outside the car on the right (in suit) and a tail car behind me with two guys and lots of uniform cops at the theater. You had to see what I saw when I turned the corner on Monroe then tried to get into the alley to the stage door. There were literally hundreds of fans, all the news media and hundreds of strobe flashes going off, it was blinding!
Yes indeed the month of September 1983 is one to remember and will certainly make an entertaining chapter in the book. Elizabeth Taylor was an incredibly gracious, nice, generous and all around wonderful woman. She and all the others in her entourage right away made me feel like part of the family. Technically I was her driver and part of the security team. After spending a month with her I truly became a fan and admirer of her because of who she truly was. She was the first big name celebrity early on to stand up and take on the AIDS fight at a time when no one else would and when very close friends of mine were getting sick and dying.
