THE CATHEDRAL

Chichester - West Sussex

The building of the cathedral, in the centre of the former Roman town, began around 1076 and continued until 1108. During the following centuries there were many addtions and, due to fires, refurbishments. In particular, the cathedral was extensively damaged during the Reformation and the Civil War of the 17th century, and was then neglected until restoration began in the 1840s. The 15th century spire collapsed in 1861 and it took four years to reconstruct. Interior restoration work is still ongoing today.
