This ancient smiling Buddha was almost destroyed by Mao's fervent (and brainwashed) Red Guards, until a monk serendipitously slipped a Mao's little red book under his arm. "The Buddha is smiling at Chairman Mao's little red book", the monk proclaimed. The Red Guards ("Chinese Taliban") had no choice but to back off.
