The lighthouse,standing on the most northerly point of Lewis, dates from 1862.It has an elevation of 52metres and the unpainted red-brick tower is 37m.high.The original lamp and Fresnel lens were replaced in 1985 with an array of sealed beam electric lamps.The lighthouse was designed by Robert Stevenson who with his descendants designed most of Scotland's lighthouses.
Robert's grandson was the famous writer Robert Louis Stevenson.
