I was selected for promotion to MSG/E8 on April Fool's Day in 2004, ironically the very same day I was eligible to submit my request to retire from the Army - which coincided on my 19th anniversary year from joining the Army. I chose to forego the promotion in order to be able to retire 12-months later after 20-years of service.
