Carquinez Suspension Bridge

The new Al Zampa Memorial Bridge across the Carquinez Strait in the San Francisco Bay is the first new suspension bridge built in the United States since 1973. The new Carquinez Bridge Opened Saturday November 8th 2003.The Al Zampa Memorail Bridge spans the Carquinez Strait where the Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers drain into San Francisco Bay about 15 miles north of Oakland, California. The Al Zampa Memorial Bridge which is often called the Carquinez Bridge is 2,388 feet long which makes it the 7th longest suspension bridge in the USA and 37th longest suspension bridge in the world. Unscrupulous tourist shop owners will sometimes sell t-shirts with a photo of Al Zampa Bridge on them but claiming it is the Golden Gate Bridge so they can avoid paying royalties. Al Zampa was a construction worker who helped build many California bridges and is famous for surviving a fall from the Golden Gate Bridge.
