110303_065904_3034185 Welcome To Autumn (Almost), Shangri-La (Thu 03 Mar)

Circular Quay, Sydney, NSW

This morning seemed to promise the first proper day of autumn. The sky was largely clear, the morning crisp, the morning light warm as it fell on the hotels near Circular Quay and The Rocks.

The first noticeable effect was a drop-off in the number of people on the bus this morning. It's my late one (around 7ish; normally I catch one about an hour earlier) but for many it's still early and doubtless seems more so as the morning temperatures inch downward and the sun makes its appearance later. (A trend which will be temporarily reversed when we go off daylight savings time 31 days from now.) Over the last few weeks there have been between half a dozen and a dozen people on the 7am bus as it leaves the start of its route, today just three. Even if you don't notice it consciously you get to pick up on the rhythms around you if you're in the same routine for long enough. This is the start of my third and probably final year at Pyrmont, so I know the ebbs and flows pretty well by now. Some of the faces that are familiar, and the vague memories some that once were but have probably since moved on themselves.

As I've often said, autumn, when it gets going, is probably the best season in Sydney. But despite this signs this is not yet it. A haze could be seen over the city by the time I got to Pyrmont and it was a touch warmer than the comfort zone when I went out at lunch time. There was supposed to be a cool south easterly wind this afternoon, but I saw no sign of it. The forecast high for tomorrow is 26 (28 in the inner west, 30 at Liverpool / Campbelltown) so summer is not yet done. Then it's supposed to rain for the weekend, sigh.

Still, this shot suggests that it can't be too long before the One True Autumn pops its meteorological head up.

That's the sort of light I like - and I like the shadows on the far skyscraper.
