Mother Flicker feeds the babies

Spokane County, Washington

Several years ago the Pileated Woodpeckers built this nest hole in a pole supporting Federal power lines. A year later the Kestrals raised a brood. In 2010 the Bonneville power agency sent a crew to replace the pole. My friend Tina Wynecoop noticed little heads peeking out as the crew worked and asked them to gently lower the pole down. They did so, then sawed off the six feet section and gently tied it to another pole. The parents returned and fed the chicks, who fledged a few days later.

These images of mother and chicks are just fabulous. I've long wanted to get this shot. Great work Jeanne.
