Gale force winds sent the chimney of this old Georgian building crashing
onto the footpath below in Dundalk town centre yesterday morning.
Miraculously no one was injured - just half an hour earlier and the street
would have been busy with children walking to school and workers going
to their jobs. An emergency exercise was put in place, residents and workers
in nearby buildings evacuated, and traffic diversions put in place. Work also
got underway in removing the rest of the chimney as well as chimneys on
other buildings for fear that they too would collapse.
