Lighting Elevation

12. It also makes a difference whether the light grazes low across the coin (left) or is placed higher shining down on the coin (right). This is a place where some cameras allow more freedom than others since it is hard to position a light in the high position if the coin must be only one inch from the lens to fill the frame. That is why I prefer a longer focal length lens like my 100mm macro allowing the camera to be several inches away from the coin. With some cameras, the left image would be the only choice available to prevent the camera from casting its shadow on the coin. Of these three, I prefer the middle (intermediate light angle) obverse and the right (high) reverse. It is not always the case that both sides of a coin will look best in the same light.
