Getting High

On my visit to the Mustang range this past Sunday, the horses were high on the ridges finding patches of snow to eat. It is a hard time for them; it is too cold and standing water is frozen, snow is hard and crusty. To hydrate, the horses have to paw the hard snow to crush it into smaller granules that they can pick up in their mouths and then move it around and swallow as it melts. They look to be very uncomfortable as they eat the snow, perhaps the same as us when we get a "brain freeze".
