The River Meuse....the Li Pontia bridge is an exact 19th century replica of an ancient earlier bridge on the site. The fortress on the right stands where one was first erected by the Romans in the 2nd century, followed by a 12th century construction that was strengthened defensively over the following centuries as wars caused the city to be repeatedly attacked. The citizens dismantled their castle, source of their miseries, in 1715. A new fortress was built on the same site by the Dutch in 1818 and came under attack again in both World Wars. Since 1957 a cable car has run up to the fortress from the opposite side of the river.
