Ran #229 for a number of years, Danville to Chattanooga, rarely touching the train-brake, which was overly susceptible to a “kicker.” The northbound connection was #144, at one time a radio train, sometimes two or more miles long. Getting it through the roller-coaster at Gradison was not as hard as one might imagine but when things weren’t working properly – you can guess about the long, long days.
