Grey squirrels

I decided to take this shot because it shows the two colour phases of the grey squirrel. The grey, from whence the species takes it name, in front, and the melanistic phase behind. Notice also how rufous the grey is? Many greys, including the melanistic phases, can often show much rufous colouring.

Hi Claudia, I think the rufous tail on the black is very dramatic. I've been trying to photograph some with that colouring, to no avail!

You are right Christine. I am looking out my window at several 'black' greys in my back yard and the coloring is quite varied especially in the tail. I see one with a black body but quite a lovely rufous tinged tail, whereas another is very black both in body and tail.
