Stone Fences of Kentucky

I've spent the past week visiting in my home state of Kentucky. Leaving today to return to NW Ohio, I took one more photograph of one of the many unique qualities of the state.

Scott County, KENTUCKY

A drive down rural Kentucky roads reveals hundreds of miles of stone fences. Some are new, some are restored and still others have remained untouched since their creation. They are “dry stone” fences built without mortar and are amazingly durable—some are more than 200 years old. Countless miles of dry stone walls once lined Kentucky roads and divided its fields, but more than 95% of them have been lost. Correctly built, a dry stone wall will last for centuries. Their biggest enemy has always been "progress."

I love the snow in this shot. It makes me want to put up a stone fence in my yard! It wouldn't look quite as good as this field, but it's worth trying right? Thanks for sharing. http://www.daviskresakfences.com

What a wonderful shot. I did not know Kentucky has stone fences; I've only see the wooden ones in the rolling hills. I'll bet they date back farther than the Civil War because now that you've shown this, I remember pictures (paintings) of the Civil War in Kentucky with these fences. "Progress" is our biggest enemy everywhere but "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."

Reminds me of Europe and the North East. Beautiful rock fence. Wish they still did this. Great tones and details and textures. BV!
