Snowshoe hare (Lepus americanus)scat and urine

Snowshoe hares are very difficult to see much of the year. Their brown summer coat hides them well in the shadows of trees, and their white winter coat blends in with snow. However, in winter, tracks and other signs of their presence are very visible. Here, you can see the deep orange urine which both hare and cottontail rabbits produce, as well as their round, dry pellet-like scat. The first time I saw hare urine I was sure that the animal had been shot and was somewhere nearby, wounded! I know better now, and understand that their urine is this deep almost dry blood-like colour! Some speculate that the colour is a result of what they eat, but if it is any other colour than this, I've not seen it.

Interestingly, last night I had three deer and two rabbits in my garden that everyone ate
the deer food I put out. V

The hare's leavings make a snowman face for sure. Pet rabbits like my son's also have pink urine. He was shocked the first time, too, after he adopted Boo Boo from the local shelter. Great awareness and tracking! V
