Though Nakuru is a soda lake it supports large numbers of Tilapia grahami which was introduced in the early 1960s. This small cichlid can tolerate high temperatures and caustic alkaline conditions thus attracting fish-eating birds.
The Great White Pelicans move up and down the rift valley lakes visiting both freshwater and soda lakes. At Nakuru, after feeding on the open lake these birds visit freshwater streams to bathe. This bird is perched on a submerged log in a freshwater spring on the edge of the lake.
