To ensure better security, there was only one way in or out of the fort. This is the drawbridge leading onto the main fort area. For added security, there is a small area to the left of this photo that is called a Ravelin - soldiers could sit behind fortified walls and shoot the opposing troops should they manage to storm the drawbridge.
