Jerusalem: The Jewish Quarter – The Western Wall to the left of the excavation site - behind it the Dome of the Rock (gold).

The Western (Wailing) Wall - The most important existing Jewish shrine because of its connection to the ancient Temple – a holy place by proxy: It’s the remaining part of a retaining wall (2000 years old) - built by King Herod to surround and create the Temple Mount – site of the first and second Temples, now the site of the Dome of the Rock.

The Dome of the Rock (on the Temple Mount) - built around 690 c.e. – rock in the middle of the Shrine from which the Prophet Muhammad supposedly rose to heaven. Jews believe that Abraham’s near sacrifice of Isaac took place on this rock. The rock is supposedly the summit of Mt. Moriah. Also, the First and Second Jewish Temples were on or beside this site.
