Muslim Quarter of the Old City: From the top of the Old City Wall. Also seen - Dome of the Rock and the Mount of Olives

Dome of the Rock (gold): Built around 690 c.e. – the rock in the middle of the Shrine from which the Prophet Muhammad supposedly rose to heaven. The Jews believe that Abraham’s near sacrifice of Isaac took place on this rock. The rock is supposedly the summit of Mt. Moriah. Also, the First and Second Jewish Temples were on or beside this site.

Mount of Olives (in the background): It has a Jewish cemetery more than 2000 years old– some buried here perhaps waiting for the Messiah and/or resurrection. Has the tomb of Zechariah and other prophets. Some believe the route to heaven is the shortest here. Also, Christ supposedly taught on the Mount of Olives and supposedly rose to heaven here.

The wall surrounding the Old City of Jerusalem was built by the Turks in the mid 1500’s.
