The natural amphitheater-like depression was first used in the early 1900s for some musical performances amongst the perfectly acoustic Red Rocks. In 1927, Denver purchased the area and enlisted the federal Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and Work Projects Administration to develop the theater. The place has had a succession of names -- "Garden of the Angels" (1870s-1906), then "Garden of the Titans" (1906–28).
