Original Dry Tortugas lighthouse was erected on Garden Key in the early 1800's, but failed to properly illuminate this crucial waterway. After the building of Fort Jefferson, the Tortugas Harbor Light was forsaken for the erection of a much better structure on Loggerhead Key. The original light at this site was destroyed and Congress authorized this metal lighthouse to be built in 1875. Fascinating history of these lights found here:
