Nordmann's Greenshank

Saemangeum, South Korea

Not a good shot at all, but being one of the rarest shorebirds in the world, it made the "Best" gallery. The global population is estimated at 500-1000 of this species, Nordmann's or Spotted Greenshank. A few of us saw one of these birds on the 4/25 at the high-tide roost on Yeongjong Island, where Incheon Airport is located.

This image was taken on 5/6 at a part of the Saemangeum area. Amazingly, in a fairly small group of birds, early that morning we had 3 Spoon-billed Sands and probably 3 Nordmann's, this being one of them. The very dark upperparts and thick-based bill are obvious in this distant shot. Nordmann's are shorter-legged than Common Greenshanks, (and we had great side-by-side comparisons) but not to the extent that it appears in this photo. The bird is standing in a slight depression, creating the no-leg look. The short tibia, in comparison to Common Greenshank is visible.
