Party in a Cemetery

St. Peter's Cemetery - Reserve, Louisiana

In the South in the United States people have a special relationship with their dead. We visit the cemeteries often, we sit at a tomb and talk to our dead relatives and, on this occasion, we have a party.
As part of the Sesquecentennial of the town of Reserve, Louisiana, there was a cemetery tour in St. Peter's Cemetery. People were asked to place votive candles at their family tombs and stand by the tombs to give the history of the people buried there. At the end of the tour it was nightime and I was not too crazy about being in the cemetery in the dark.

What an interesting custom. A fine way to get to know people.

Very interesting. Maybe, we should start this tradition a little bit earlier and honor persons while they are alive. Visit them in a NH, spend time with them, and bear witness to their infirmity.

I think it's safer in there after dark than out on some streets :)

What an interesting tradition Coleen, but I'm with you, don't want to be there after dark!

I often wondered what Jesus said when he said "Let the dead bury the dead." Nice photo. V
