Puffball (Lycoperdon sp.)

There are many species of Lycoperdon puffballs. This was one of about 3 poking up through the leaves. I touched it and a great cloud of brown spores drifted out of the opening on top. In close-up it looks to me like a clay pot.

I found a number of them here too. There may have been 10 to 15 in a clump. Most interesting mushroom if you can call them that.

It sounds like this puffball found its encounter with you quite "exhausting"!!
:))
