Sky Garden

Pu'u Maka'ala NAR

This massive 'ohi'a in Pu'u Maka'ala NAR is covered with various epiphytic plants. Most visible are the astelia, but there are also various trees and shrubs such as 'ohelo, 'olapa and kolea. Long after the 'ohi'a dies some of these epiphytes will persist, until the skeleton of the ancient tree finally falls. The trunk is several feet in diameter, so it could be a thousand or more years old.
