It was at the Battle of Stirling Bridge, on September 11, 1297, not too far from this castle, that William Wallace let a band of Scots in victory over the English army. The night following the battle, Wallace joined in a victory feast here in Stirling Castle. As a result of this battle, the English were driven out of Scotland, except for Roxburgh and Berwick, in the castles of which two tough garrisons of English maintained a stubborn resistance until they were relieved by the Earl of Surrey in January, 1298. The Battle of Stirling Bridge was depicted in the movie "Braveheart," staring Mel Gibson as Wallace.
