Next stop was the Suwanne Canal entrance (outside of Folkston) to Okefenokee. Since time was short by now, I took the Swamp Island Drive first and stopped at the Chesser homestead on Chesser Island. The home was built in 1927 and had survived many swamp fires, due in part to the cleared sand yard and in greater part to the efforts of all the fire fighters. The sand yard helped keep insects down, kept the house from direct line of swamp fires, and made it much easier to spot and shoo away snakes.
