Exuberance, Mission Beach, San Diego, California, 2010

Three minutes after making the previous image of this mother and child passing a fisherman on Mission Beach, (See http://www.pbase.com/image/128757516 ), they had moved up the beach a considerable distance. The main the subject, the young child, now generates an entirely different human value: exuberance. She is giddy with excitement as she walks in the surf. I found her exerting maximum diagonal pressure on her mother’s arm as she feels the cool touch of the small waves on her feet. A pair of shorebirds at left and right surrender space to the pair of people who pay them no heed.

Good comparison, Iris. The interpretations are different -- while both images express human values by depicting a child exerting diagonal pressure on their mother's arms, this one is all about exuberance. The child wants to walk on water, while the mother does not. The child pulls to the side, while the mother holds her ground. In my NYC street image, also in this gallery athttp://www.pbase.com/pnd1/image/127224051 , the child seems worried about the light changing, and is literally dragging her mother across the street, expressing the human value of urgency in the process. They each tell their story through human values.

Reminds me of your NYC image entitled "Urgency". In both images, the child is exerting diagonal pressure on her mother's arm, but the interpretation is different. The crowded street scene projects a sense of urgency and tension while the empty peaceful beach projects a feeling of joy. A story told!!
