Seashells, Mission Beach, San Diego, California, 2010

I had not even left the living room of our rented beach house when the first picture opportunity of the day revealed itself. The morning light defined the stepped edge of the living room's mantle, as well a large glass jar filled with seashells. The morning light flowing through the jar encouraged me to make a number of images, using my spot-metering mode on the brightest of the shells. All else fall into shadow. The shells were once essential parts of living sea creatures. Now they have become someone’s collectables, decor made out of nature’s work.

Thanks, Vera. You right -- such light as this can trigger an emotional response, particularly when you realize that these shells were once part of living creatures.

I love this one also. It is timeless and brings back memories of youth. It is amazing how still life can evoke such emotions.

For some images, Alister, we can travel great distances and hope to find what we may looking for. However in this case, all I had to do was to look up from my morning cup of coffee, and see this light, as well as this metaphor for departed marine life, staring me in the face. The rest was simply a matter of execution. If we can learn one great lesson from this image, it is to not just to look, but also to see. We have to recognize a valuable potential image in order to make it. Thanks for commenting on this one.

On my first scan through the images, this one leapt out at me.. You know my passion for graphic, mysterious images, and this one "just works"... A delightful portrait of beach life, but at the same time a somewhat melancholy memory of departed marine life! Talk about juxtaposition!!
