Covered, Mission Beach, San Diego, California, 2010

It was mid-afternoon, and the temperature was in the mid-70s, as it is most of the time during a San Diego summer. Yet this beach-goer incongruously challenges the sun with clothing, towels and a large red umbrella. I liked the colors – they scream for attention, yet he pays no heed.

Thanks for pointing out the contrast between ages here. I agree -- the older man seems passive and contained, while the younger man in soft focus uses his arms and expresses energy in an open manner. The image becomes a metaphor for stages of life.

I like the relationship between the two figures - almost a visual essay on age and youth. The older person is protected and passive - as if life has presented enough challenges already - it's time to rest - while the younger man is out in the open ready for what ever life has to offer.
