Augustus had the red granite obelisk of Psammeticus II (594-589 BC) moved
from Heliopolis to this site to be part of a sundial on the Campus Martius.
It was damaged during the sack of Rome in the 11th Century but restored
in 1792 by Pope Pius VI who wanted to use it as a solar clock.
