The Market Square

This is part of The Market Square in the centre of Dundalk. Once home
of the town's market, it has been the subject of much debate in recent
years as a number of plans to redevelop it were rejected by the Town
Council. Councillors this week have voted for a €3million revamp
which it's hoped will make it a more attractive space for both
townspeople and visiors.
Have been busy lately - will catch up with everyone soon.

I've looked at this one a couple of times now and I'm still not quite sure what to make of it. In theory the original designers ticked the boxes; trees, check, water feature, check, sculpture, check... yet it still seems a little uninviting to me. Most likely it's the absence of people. We have a couple of public spaces like that in Sydney. The Powers That Be came up with some "open spaces for the people" but the reality is that no-one wanted to hang around large, windswept plazas with concrete underfoot. This is a good photograph in that it makes you reflect a little on what's right and wrong about the place.

Making the decision to spend 3M in tough economic times is a heavy responsibility. I hope the money is well spent! It has potential!

If they're going to spend that much - make sure they wash the sand properly next time so that they don't get salt stains on the brickwork ;-)

From your photo it looks like a lovely place just the way it is.
