...and perhaps reverse the image. Try it and see if it looks good. The openness of the background may be better situated on the left of the image...helping to bring the eye to the subject (my old roommate.)

My old university roommate! How did you know? OK...less fence, more subject. You can still use the fence boards to frame the face, but the "less is more" axiom works here too. I would crop out the dark shadowy area on the left side of the image completely, leaving only the horizontal boards to frame the face. Then I would lighten the face, and tone-down the green background.
The catchlight in the eye makes this image "live". Nicely done...just refine. Think outside the box.
